Area of Emphasis
Chris Buell is an associate in the Litigation Services Group of Babst Calland. He focuses his practice in the areas of oil and gas, admiralty and maritime and commercial litigation.
In the area of oil and gas litigation, Mr. Buell regularly represents exploration and production companies and other energy industry clients in a wide variety of litigation matters encountered by operators in the Marcellus Shale play. Mr. Buell’s experience includes representing clients with respect to quiet title litigation, leasing disputes, toxic tort and property damage claims, and municipal ordinance issues.
In his admiralty and maritime practice, Mr. Buell has experience defending clients in claims under the Jones Act and the Longshore, the Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, and for maintenance and cure. Mr. Buell also represents marine clients in maritime property and casualty claims and limitation of liability actions.
Mr. Buell also has experience representing clients in mechanics’ lien claims and other payment-related issues and construction defect claims and litigation.
Mr. Buell has represented clients in a wide variety of commercial litigation in state and federal courts, including contract claims under the Uniform Commercial Code, business torts and other commercial disputes.
Background
Mr. Buell received his B.A. with highest distinction in journalism from The Pennsylvania State University, where he was selected to serve as class marshal and for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Buell earned his J.D. in 2006 from The University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he graduated magna cum laude with a certificate in advanced study of environmental law, science, and policy. While in law school, Mr. Buell served as senior managing editor of the Law Review, as a senior editor for JURIST, Pitt’s legal news and research website, and as a teaching assistant for a first-year legal writing class. He also competed as a member of Pitt’s National Environmental Moot Court team.
Memberships and Affiliations
Mr. Buell is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He is also admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the Southern District of West Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations and the West Virginia Bar. Mr. Buell currently serves on the board of directors for JURIST Legal News and Research Services, Inc., a nonprofit legal news, commentary and research provider.
