Area of Emphasis
James Weaver is an associate in the Energy & Natural Resources and Business Services Groups of Babst Calland.
Mr. Weaver concentrates his practice in the areas of energy – oil, gas and minerals, business transactions and tax, counseling clients on a wide range of oil, gas and mineral matters including oil and gas title opinions, title examination, due diligence, contractual and regulatory issues. He has handled matters involving oil, gas and mineral transactions and acquisitions.
Mr. Weaver counsels businesses and individuals in various industries, including for-profit and non-profit entities, on transactional and regulatory matters involving business and corporate law, commercial finance and tax. He has assisted clients with negotiating and drafting documents in a variety of commercial transactions including mergers and acquisitions, entity formation and governance, licensing, assignments and financial transactions. Mr. Weaver also has an extensive background in the practice of tax law, having represented individuals, business clients and non-profit organizations in matters involving federal, foreign, state and local tax law issues. His experience includes tax planning in a variety of transactions involving entity selection and formation, structuring, dispositions of ownership interest and assets, and mergers and acquisitions. His tax experience also includes drafting letter ruling requests dealing with a variety of tax issues.
Background
Mr. Weaver earned his B. A. from Washington and Jefferson College in 1994 and his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 2004. While in law school, he served as the Managing Editor of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Journal of Technology Law and Policy.
Prior to joining Babst Calland, Mr. Weaver practiced as a corporate and tax associate in the Pittsburgh office of a national law firm and with a Texas based energy law firm. He also practiced as an international tax manager in the Pittsburgh office of PricewaterhouseCoopers and prior to attending law school practiced as a certified public accountant in the Washington, D.C. area.
Memberships and Affiliations
Mr. Weaver is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations.

Mr. Weaver has been published and lectured on various tax and business law issues before professional organizations and for continuing legal education courses.
