Area of Emphasis
Joe Decker is of counsel in the Litigation Services Group. His practice focuses primarily on the litigation and trial of business and intellectual property disputes. Mr. Decker’s trial results include a multi-million dollar jury verdict for a manufacturing client against a large manufacturer for willful patent infringement, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit, as well as significant jury verdicts in communications, land development and insurance coverage cases. He also has tried cases in arbitration involving securities fraud, trade secret and non-competition agreements. Mr. Decker advises on e-discovery issues, and established Babst Calland’s e-discovery department.
Background
Mr. Decker graduated with a B.S., magna cum laude, from Syracuse University in 1976. He received his J.D, with honors, from the University of San Francisco School of Law in 1985, where he served as Articles Editor for the U.S.F. Law Review, in which he also was published. He spent his first six years of practice with a large San Francisco law firm.
Memberships and affiliations
Mr. Decker is admitted to practice before the Supreme Courts of Pennsylvania and California, the United States Supreme Court, the United States District Courts for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Northern District of Ohio, and the Northern and Central Districts of California, and before the United States Courts of Appeal for the Third, Fifth, Ninth and Federal Circuits. Mr. Decker is an E-discovery Special Master for the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations. Mr. Decker is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Litigation, Antitrust and Intellectual Property Sections, and a member of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association. He is co-chair of the ACBA Legal Technology and E-Discovery Committee.
