Area of Emphasis
Matt Smith is an associate in the Employment and Labor Services Group and Litigation Services Group at Babst Calland. Mr. Smith counsels and litigates on behalf of employers and employees, including family-owned and small businesses, in all aspects of the employment relationship, from hiring through separation. He regularly advises clients on employment discrimination issues and rights, workplace harassment, disability accommodation, Family & Medical Leave Act compliance and rights, employee handbooks, wage and hour issues, workplace investigations, disciplinary action, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, and waivers and releases. He has also handled matters on behalf of both employees and employers before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, and state and federal court proceedings. In addition, Mr. Smith is active in the area of workplace harassment training for employees.
Background
Mr. Smith was born and raised in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania and graduated from Bethel Park High School in 1991. In 1995, Mr. Smith graduated from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida where he earned a B.A. in History. While at Rollins College, Mr. Smith received the 1995 Outstanding Achievement in History Award given by the History Department. In 1994, Mr. Smith attended The Washington Semester Program at The American University in Washington, D.C. and served as an intern for Congressman William J. Coyne.
Mr. Smith received his J.D. from the Duquesne University School of Law in 1999, where he was a member of the Duquesne Law Review. At Duquesne, Mr. Smith was a recipient of a John J. Sciullo Endowed Fund Scholarship.
Prior to joining the Firm in 1999, Mr. Smith gained additional experience with a Pittsburgh area law firm that concentrated in Workers' Compensation Law.
Memberships and Affiliations
Mr. Smith is admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania. Mr. Smith is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations. In 2005, he earned Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the Human Resources Certification Institute.
Mr. Smith currently serves in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and represents the 42nd Legislative District in Allegheny County, PA. In the House, he serves on the Appropriations, Insurance, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and Finance Committees.
Mr. Smith is a board member of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. He also serves on the board of the Three Rivers Regatta Board. Mr. Smith is a former board member of Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA). He served on the Transition Team for Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato from November 2003 through June 2004.
