Area of Emphasis

Rick Kalson is the chairman of the Construction Services Group and a member of the Litigation Services Group of Babst Calland. Mr. Kalson provides counsel to contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and project owners in litigation and business consultation matters, including many ENR 400 contractors and ENR 600 specialty contractors, on all phases of the construction process on projects throughout the United States. He has represented clients in construction disputes involving infrastructure, bridges, airports, highways, schools, retail complexes, warehouses, medical centers, petrochemical plants, commercial buildings, hotels, residential developments, ice skating rinks, prisons and government buildings before courts and arbitrators in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, Massachusetts and many other states across the country. 

Background

Mr. Kalson received his B.A. in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1990, where he graduated with honors. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1993. Prior to joining Babst Calland, Mr. Kalson was the practice group leader of the construction law group of a large regional Pittsburgh based law firm.

Memberships and Affiliations

Mr. Kalson is admitted to practice before the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Claims. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. Mr. Kalson is the Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium and the First Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cooper-Siegel Library, as well as, Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Mr. Kalson is the chair of the Facilities Committee for construction of the new Cooper-Siegel Library, as well as the new Boyd Community Center. He was the president of the Hillel Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh from 2004 until 2006 and the vice-chair of the Building Committee for Hillel Jewish University Center of Pittsburgh’s new facility and is now an Emeritus Board Member and Chair of the Facilities Committee. Mr. Kalson has been recognized as one of Pennsylvania’s top lawyers since 2010, according to an annual survey published in Philadelphia magazine.
