Area of Emphasis

Tim Wolfson is a shareholder in the Environment, Energy and Natural Resources Group of Babst Calland.  Mr. Wolfson’s practice focuses on environmental and tort litigation involving technical and science issues.  At the outset of his career, Mr. Wolfson was involved in several landmark environmental cases and has significant experience litigating large-scale cost recovery cases under RCRA, CERCLA and state law statutes, and also in defending clients in mass tort and class action cases involving chemical exposure issues.  Through these cases he has gained significant experience litigating issues associated with environmental sciences and toxicology.  As a result of his experience, Mr. Wolfson frequently counsels his environmental clients on science-based issues such as public health assessments, analytical methodology and development of health-based chemical reference doses.  In that capacity, he regularly interacts with science and technical professionals and representatives of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. EPA, Pennsylvania DEP and the federal ATSDR.

Mr. Wolfson has litigated civil cases before numerous federal and state courts and administrative tribunals, including the United States District Courts and Courts of Appeals in several states, the Pennsylvania Common Pleas and Commonwealth Courts, the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board and the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission.  He has had significant experience in alternative dispute resolution proceedings involving various ADR organizations, including arbitrations and mediations involving the American Arbitration Association and JAMS, as well as court-annexed and private arbitration and mediation.  Mr. Wolfson offers his services as a neutral in non-binding mediation.

Background

Mr. Wolfson earned his B.S. summa cum laude in Business Administration with an emphasis in Business Information Systems from Robert Morris College in 1988, and his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1992. Mr. Wolfson was Business Editor of the University of Pittsburgh Law Review and was elected for membership to the Order of the Coif. While in law school, he won the Murray S. Love Trial Moot Court Competition. Mr. Wolfson served fifteen years as a member of the Board of Governors for the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Alumni Association, and is a Past President of that organization. Mr. Wolfson is the firm’s representative to the EU-based International Practice Group, and counsels clients on issues involving cross-border regulation of chemicals, including REACH.  Mr. Wolfson regularly speaks to professional and industry groups on legal issues involving toxicology and environmental science, and also on computer technology, software licensing and the internet.
