Babst Calland Employees Donate Nearly $21,000
to American Heart Association
PITTSBURGH, October 31, 2011 – Babst Calland, one of the region’s leading law firms, recently participated in the American Heart Association’s Heart walk at Heinz Field. Enthusiastic employees who turned out for the walk donated nearly $21,000 and brought their spouses, children and even their dogs. The Babst Calland contingent fielded three teams, Calland’s Crew, Ryorythms and the Pace Makers and those teams included 48 walkers. Babst Calland walked away with the first place award in the corporate team category.
In addition, Dennis Collins, Controller at Babst Calland, received an individual merit award as the individual who raised the most money online on the last day of the event and as of the date of the event, was honored as the leading individual fundraiser. “My son Ryan was diagnosed with sudden cardiac arrest in 2009 and luckily, two people trained in CPR administered chest compressions until medical help arrived. If they hadn’t been trained, I doubt if my son would have survived. The information and training from the American Heart Association is such a valuable community benefit,” he said.

Val Oxenreiter was another major organizer at the law firm. “To support AHA’s cause, we held a number of events in our firm – one of which was Jeans Friday,” Val said. “By donating $5 each Friday, employees were permitted to wear jeans that day. We offered that option for a month but, it was so popular, that Dean Calland extended the time to a two month window,” she added.
For every dollar donated by employees, the law firm matched that donation. Dean Calland, one of the firm’s founding shareholders, noted that “the firm was proud to support AHA’s mission to build healthier lives free from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. We provide community support for many worthwhile causes but this was a major and truly worthwhile event for the firm this year.”
