Scott K. McKernan

Area of Emphasis

Scott McKernan is a shareholder in the Energy and Natural Resources Group of Babst Calland. Mr. McKernan’s practice includes counseling various clients on matters involving natural resources and energy law with an emphasis on transactional matters related to the acquisition and development of oil and gas leases and rendering oil and gas title opinions. He provides services regarding oil and gas leasing, oil and gas title issues and opinions and due diligence projects for various transactions, including those involving the acquisition and divestiture of assets consisting of oil and gas fees and leasehold interests. He also counsels clients in matters involving seismic data acquisition and licensing, as well as matters involving transactions of subsurface rights, including oil and gas rights.

Mr. McKernan is active in representing members of the community on a pro bono basis. He participates in the Criminal Records Expungement Project through the Pittsburgh Pro Bono Partnership and Neighborhood Legal Services, where he has the opportunity to help clients through the process of having their criminal records cleared to the extent permitted by law for the purpose of obtaining housing and employment.


Mr. McKernan received his B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Education from St. Vincent College in 2004. While at St. Vincent, he was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, an academic honor society, and Kappa Delta Pi, an international education honor society. Mr. McKernan graduated from Duquesne University School of Law in 2007. Before joining Babst Calland, he was an associate with law firms located in Pittsburgh and in Indiana, Pennsylvania that concentrated on oil, gas and mineral law, business and commercial litigation, corporate and business law, and commercial real estate law.

Mr. McKernan is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. He is a member of the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations. Mr. McKernan is also a member of various organizations in the oil and gas industry, such as the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, American Association of Professional Landmen, Young Professionals in Energy and the National Association of Division Order Analysts.
