Renewable gas is increasingly gaining traction as a valuable resource in the decarbonization era. This symposium will serve as a forum for the energy sector to explore the applications and opportunities of this resource – specifically evaluating two categories of renewable gas: \n\nRenewable Natural Gas (RNG): pipeline-quality natural gas (biomethane) derived from processing\, cleaning and treating raw biogas; primarily from landfills\, wastewater treatment plants\, and animal manure. It is interchangeable with natural gas and carbon neutral.\nRenewable Hydrogen or Green Hydrogen: hydrogen produced without emitting greenhouse gases as a by-product. It can be generated from renewable electricity by electrolysis\, from biogas by steam reforming\, and biomass through thermal conversion.\n\nAttendees will gain in-depth knowledge about these renewable gas resources\, with sessions providing comprehensive coverage of their involved technologies & production processes\, market outlook & project economics\, and related policy & regulatory initiatives. \nExpert discussions will also address the potential roles of renewable gas to: utilize existing infrastructure (thus mitigating stranded assets)\, serve as an energy storage resource (power to gas)\, and support decarbonization efforts and high penetrations of renewable energy on the grid. \nAttorney Gary Steinbauer will be the moderator for “The Regulatory & Policy Landscape: Decarbonization\, Natural Gas & Renewable Gas Initiatives” on Tuesday\, November 9. Green hydrogen\, which uses renewable energy to produce hydrogen from water is attracting the attention of governments and businesses worldwide as it has been identified as an energy source that could help the world achieve carbon free economy by 2050. \nGreen hydrogen could supply our energy needs\, fuel our cars\, heat our homes\, and be used in industries that have no economically viable alternative to fossil fuels and could revolutionize value chains in the energy industry. \nThis seminar will provide a primer on green hydrogen in the rapidly changing energy marketplace. It will cover the fundamentals of green hydrogen\, how it is produced\, stored\, transported\, its applications & use to its role in the future energy systems. \nAttorney Gary Steinbauer will present “Examining the Current Policy Drivers and Incentive Programs for Green Hydrogen Projects” on Tuesday\, June 21. Insightful technical and public affairs sessions\, national keynote addresses\, and networking receptions will provide attendees\, sponsors\, and exhibitors unique access to the industry’s most influential leaders and innovators. \nAttorneys Jim Curry and Kevin Garber will co-present “The Latest Hydrogen and CCS Developments and What They Mean for the Natural Gas Industry.” Hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration have emerged as a potential solution to address unprecedented decarbonization demands from investors\, customers and governments. The U.S. Department of Energy will soon be reviewing applications and awarding grants for regional Hydrogen Hubs\, perhaps including one in Appalachia\, while private industry continues to actively explore the generation of hydrogen and its use for industrial\, transportation and other uses. Sequestering the carbon is a key component to the development and deployment of hydrogen as an energy source\, particularly in our region. This session will provide the latest developments on the status of IIJA review and funding of hydrogen hubs\, the generation of hydrogen and the market for off-takers\, CO2 and hydrogen pipeline regulation and permitting\, and primacy for UIC permitting of injection wells. \nAttorney Keith Coyle will be the moderator and Senior Director of Safety Chris Hoidal will be a co-panelist for “Pipeline Safety in the Biden Administration.” The Biden administration has issued several significant pipeline safety rules since coming to office in January 2021\, including new safety standards and reporting requirements for onshore gas gathering lines\, as well as new valve installation and rupture detection standards for gas\, hazardous liquid\, and carbon dioxide pipelines. The Administration is also developing new rulemaking proposals to establish enhanced leak detection and repair requirements for gas pipelines and address other congressional mandates. These new rulemakings\, along with the Administration’s focus on environmental issues\, have impacted the regulatory landscape and policy priorities of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)\, the federal agency charged with administering the nation’s pipeline safety program.
